OpenAI's recent reshuffling of roles and restructuring of the board definitely marks an interesting turn of events. It seems they're on a quest to find the perfect blend of leadership and governance structure to "create safe AGI that benefits all of humanity." One can only imagine the debates and pressure testing required to achieve such an important goal. Let's hope they find a solution that sets a precedent for other AI organizations, pushing us towards a responsible and ethically-conscious future.

That governance structure sounds rather unique. How, legally, does this work? How can a non-profit also operate as a for-profit company?

In a nutshell, there are two entities - the for-profit OpenAI LP and non-profit OpenAI, Inc. The board of directors controls the non-profit company which is the majority owner of the for-profit company. The non-profit that way has a control over for-profit company.
